September 02, 2015: Following a successful trial, Monarch Airlines has signed an agreement with the Royal Gibraltar Post Office (RGPO) to carry packages and documents between Gibraltar and the UK.
Since 2013 the RGPO has been dispatching mail and packages to Britain separately. As a result, packages have been taking two days longer to deliver than general mail. With the addition of Monarch's capacity, more than half of all mail is now delivered in the UK by Wednesday with the balance delivered on Thursday.
The new Monarch service is in addition to the current flights by British Airways. And with the help of the UK's Royal Mail, the RGPO has been able to use semi-active RFID to monitor the quality of service of both airlines.
Aidan Cronin, director of Airline Cargo Management, Monarch UK cargo agent, commented: "Monarch Airlines Cargo is delighted to be working alongside HM Government of Gibraltar and the Royal Gibraltar Post Office in this venture and looks forward to being able to offer added value and a reliable service on the flights from Gibraltar to the UK."
Gibraltar government minister for Business and Employment Neil Costa said: "With the establishment of a closer working relationship with Monarch Airlines, we have been able to introduce this service to significantly improve what is already offered. We have already seen the results of the trials and these, I can say, are very favorable."
