October 04, 2015: The CMA CGM Bougainville, inaugurated on October 06 by president of France François Hollande, has become the first box ship to turn its 18,000 TEUs into smart, connected objects.
Earlier this year, the company announced it had increased its investment in Traxens – an IT company providing real-time data solutions for the shipping line's container fleet.
Now, after three years R&D, Traxens technology can provide real-time data to CMA CGM via built-in relay antennas on all the TEUs aboard the Bougainville, including positioning, temperature, physical condition, Customs clearance, possible theft as well as external air pollution and internal condition of the cargo.
The Traxens technology can also remotely control and adjust the temperature of refrigerated containers and will allow resource optimization for routine inspections.
Elie Zeenny, senior vice president Group IT Systems for the container line commented: "With this technology, CMA CGM brings the shipping industry into a new era. In a world where information is key, we are taking a significant step ahead. We will now be able to collect data in real-time, which is equally important to us and to our clients. Containers are becoming 'connected devices.'"
