October 09, 2015: Munich Airport has reported record cargo and passenger traffic for the first nine months of 2015.
By the end of September, air cargo throughput totaled 236,000 tons, a 10 percent rise over the same period in 2014, and a new record for the airport.
A major factor behind the strong gains is the increased use of cargo aircraft. As a result, the share of the total tonnage carried on freighters rose by nearly one third to approximately 41,000 tons. Meanwhile, freight transported on passenger flights increased by about 6.0 percent to 195,000 tons.
Total passenger traffic for the nine months was 31.3 million – a gain of 4.0 percent over the same period last year – while the number of takeoffs and landings also increased by 1.1 percent to nearly 288,000.
In the third quarter the Bavarian hub posted several all-time highs: nearly 12 million passengers used the airport between July and September while August set a new single-month traffic record with just under four million passengers.
Munich expects to set a new record for cargo as well as an all-time high of more than 41 million passengers by the end of 2015.
Based on the figures provided by the airlines to date, the airport expects the current growth trend will continue into 2016.
