BAKU, Azerbaijan: April 08, 2016. Following the application by Silk Way West Airlines’ subsidiary SW Italia for rights between Milan and Chicago, the U.S. and Azerbaijan have signed an Open Skies Agreement to liberalize air transport.
President of Azerbaijan Airlines Jahangir Asgarov (right of picture) and U.S. ambassador to Azerbaijan Robert Cekuta signed the agreement that is expected to expand aviation-based trade between the two countries.
Silk Way West Airlines has been operating weekly 747-800 freighter flights between Baku and New York since May last year.
Washington, DC-based aviation law firm The Wicks Group advised the Azerbaijan government throughout the negotiation process. Partner Ekaterina Grimes commented: “It was a moment of great pride for us having been a real part of the development of civil aviation in Azerbaijan for the past decade.
“Silk Way, Azal, and the State Civil Aviation Administration are not only our clients but our long standing colleagues and partners. We take great pride in our being a positive part of Azerbaijan’s growth and development,” she added.
In 2014 the law firm helped Azerbaijan achieve FAA International Aviation Safety Assessment Category 1 status to ensure the country’s airlines could operate to the U.S. and codeshare with U.S. carriers.
