Maersk begins Alang recycling

COPENHAGEN: May 13, 2016. Maersk Line is to deliver two of its containerships, the Maersk Wyoming and Maersk Georgia, for recycling at the Shree Ram yard, Alang in the Indian state of Gujarat later this month.

Shree Ram groupMaersk says the market for ship recycling is dominated by practices unchanged for decades. Of the 768 ships recycled globally in 2015, 469 – or 74 percent of the total gross tonnage scrapped - were sold to facilities on beaches in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The company says its policy is to only recycle ships responsibly and until recently this was only possible in a limited number of yards in China and Turkey.

Following several audits of upgraded facilities in Alang last year, Maersk concluded that responsible recycling at the yard could be accelerated.

“The Alang plans come at a cost for us, but we will invest money and human resources to ensure we can already now scrap our vessels in compliance with the Hong Kong Convention provisions (HSE) as well as international standards on labor conditions and anti-corruption,” said Annette Stube, Maersk Group head of Sustainability.

“We will also have staff on-site at Shree Ram. They will be working closely with the yard to further upgrade practices, processes and facilities to ensure that the recycling of our vessels complies with our standards,” she added.

PSA launches incubator program

SINGAPORE: May 09, 2016. Port group PSA International has launched a S$20 million incubator program from its venture capital arm PSA unboxed for start-ups to develop innovative logistics solutions.

Kelvin Wong, assistant managing director, Singapore Economic Development Board added: “The logistics industry is seeing the emergence of numerous supply chain start-ups that are introducing new, potentially disruptive solutions. IAG Cargo splits Gulf services

LONDON/MADRID: May 12, 2016. For its winter 2016 schedule, IAG Cargo is to separate its current Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Bahrain and Doha services into individual flights. The result will be an additional 83 percent increase in capacity says the company.

A B787-9 will serve the Abu Dhabi route while a B777-200 will operate to Bahrain, Doha and Muscat, offering customers up to 20 tonnes per flight. Flights to Muscat will operate five times a week, while services to Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Doha will operate on a daily basis.

Camilo Garcia, head of Sales at IAG Cargo, said the expansion is timely due to Bahrain’s efforts to diversify its economy and Doha gearing up for the 2022 football world cup.
