LONDON GATEWAY/HAMBURG: June 20, 2016. Cranes have been on the move from China to London and from the Ukraine to Egypt this week.
DP World has taken delivery of four quay cranes from China (left) for the third berth at its container terminal due to open later this year. The cranes are 138 meters high and weigh 2,000 tons and took 45 minutes to move from ship to quay at high tide using pulleys and winches.
With the opening of the new berth, the company said it would have more deep-water capacity than any other port in the UK.
DP World London Gateway CEO Cameron Thorpe commented: “These cranes are unique in the UK. They are safer, more wind resilient, able to lift more containers in one movement and comfortably reach out across and above the largest container ships.”
A further 20 automated stacking cranes and additional 10 modules have already been installed, while in April, the port took delivery of a fleet of hybrid shuttle carriers.
Meanwhile Hansa Heavy Lift has transported four rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes (right) each weighing 132 tonnes from Odessa, Ukraine to Damietta, Egypt on behalf of deugro (Finland).
The global tramp carrier successfully lifted each RTG at both the port of loading and the port of discharge, deploying the two cranes of the HHL Kobe, which have a combined lifting capability of 800 tonnes.
“In addition to a structural assessment, several 3D simulations were required during the planning stage due to the height of the cargo to find the perfect manoeuver needed to avoid the boom structure of the vessel’s cranes coming into contact with the unit during placement,” said Ian Broad, director Cargo Management for Hansa.
