BRUSSELS: June 20, 2016. In recognition of its contribution to pharma logistics, Brussels Airport has won the title ‘Best Airport in the World’ for the third year running.
At a ceremony during Messe Munchen’s transport logistic expo in Shanghai last week, the airport’s cargo head Steve Polmans took the opportunity to thank the air cargo community, stakeholders and partners for their support: “Together, we will realize our ambitions and remain the most efficient and best air cargo gateway in the world,” he declared.
The award follows the start of a twice-weekly Etihad A330 freighter service between Abu Dhabi and Brussels. In launching the service the airline acknowledged the airport’s dedicated infrastructure for the transport and handling of products that require an unbroken cold chain, particularly pharmaceutical products and perishables.
Etihad Cargo vice president David Kerr commented: “Brussels is an important route into Europe with the freight operation returning to full strength, so as part of our plans to expand further this year, we are pleased to begin operating in and out of the city.
“Brussels provides vital connections across Europe and is also a key connector into Africa so we know that it will be another important route on our global freighter network,” he added.
In March last year Etihad Cargo launched its ‘TempCheck’ pharma service for temperature-sensitive products including blood plasma, tablets, medicines and anesthetics.
Late last month Miami and Brussels airports announced the launch of a new organisation to improve the quality and handling of pharma products by air. Both airports are an IATA certified Center of Excellence for Independent Validators (CEIV).
