Good move for air cargo industry

GENEVA: September 06, 2016. IATA members reported a 5.0 percent increase in air cargo demand in July compared to the same month last year. It was the fastest rise in almost 18 months. However as capacity rose 5.2 percent, yields didn't show much improvement.

Steve Polmans BACThe strongest traffic growth was in Europe and the Middle East, with demand up by 7.2 percent and 6.7 percent respectively. North American carriers saw freight volumes expand 4.1 percent and Asia-Pacific airlines reported a 4.9 percent increase. However demand in Latin America and Africa fell 5.6 percent and 6.8 percent respectively during the month.

"July was a positive month for air freight—which is an all too rare occurrence. Despite that, we must recognize that we face some strong headwinds on fundamental aspects of the business," said IATA's new director general, former Air France-KLM Group chairman Alexandre de Juniac.

The retirement of Tony Tyler as IATA CEO and replacement by de Juniac coincides with the appointment of Steve Polmans (right), head of Cargo at Brussels Airport Company (BAC), to TIACA's Board of Directors.

Polmans, who has over 15 years' experience in the aviation industry, is also the chairman of the Air Cargo Belgium Association based at Brussels Airport. "I strongly believe that more cooperation between all stakeholders is to the benefit of our industry," he noted.

"We are facing challenging but interesting times. Our industry is in need of change, and digitization and innovation must become part of our behavior and culture."

Prior to joining BAC, Polmans worked for ground handler Aviapartner Cargo, before moving on to logistics marketing specialist GLU4 BV, where he managed the company's Benelux operations.

Commnting on the appointment TIACA secretary general Doug Brittin, who retires later this year, said: "Steven's experience and energy will be a welcome addition to our Board."
