DHL keeps up its GARD

BONN/DENPASAR: September 06, 2016. Deutsche Post DHL and the U.N. Development Programme (UNDP) have completed their latest training 'Get Airports Ready for Disaster' (GARD) at three Indonesian airports: Bali, Lombok International and Lombok Selaparang.

DHL GARDSince 2009, GARD trainings have been held in eight airports in Indonesia because of the frequent risk of earthquakes, tsunamis and active volcanoes throughout the country's 18,000 islands, of which over 900 are inhabited.

Bali and Lombok are categorized as high-risk areas in the Indonesian Disaster Risk Index (2013). Airports in both provinces close due to regular volcanic eruptions from the nearby 12,000 ft. Mount Rinjani. The last time was in August.

The GARD workshop involved over 50 people from the airport operating company, aviation safety experts, national and regional disaster management planning agencies, the Indonesian Red Cross, immigration authorities, the military and the police force.

"Following natural disasters, airports become vital hubs for the processing of incoming relief supplies," said Christof Ehrhart, head of Corporate Communications and Responsibility at DP DHL. "This program continues to help improve disaster management in this geologically high-risk region."

The training included evaluation of the airports' capacities for processing high volumes of passengers and cargo and warehousing relief supplies.

"Often airports are unprepared to manage large disasters or humanitarian crisis and as a result, assistance gets slower in getting to those most affected," added U.N. Resident Coordinator in Indonesia, Douglas Broderick.

So far DHL and the UNDP has conducted GARD workshops at 34 airports in Armenia, Bangladesh, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Lebanon, Macedonia, Nepal, Panama, Peru, the Philippines, the Seychelles, Sri Lanka and Turkey.
