PARIS: October 27, 2016: Ekol Logistics and VIIA, a rail operator part of SNCF Logistics, have launched a once-weekly service from the French port of Sète, south of Montpellier, to Noisy-le-Sec, in North-East Paris.
The 24-hour service for truck trailers is a successful first step towards building a North-South rail transport corridor according to Ekol.
Wojciech Brzuska, general manager and executive board member for Ekol Europe commented: "Our strategy is to have more and more train connections within Europe so this new Ekol train is the next step for us.
"Transit time is similar to transport by truck, but of course, the rail service is much more environmentally-friendly. Thanks to this new service we're saving 180,000 kg of CO2 emissions a month - or 'saving a forest the size of 20 football fields," he added.
Both Ekol and ViiA have begun planning additional services from Sète to the UK, Benelux, and Germany.
Multimodal Ekol Logistics operates in 14 European countries offering services to the automotive, textile, FMCG and health industries.
VIIA is an intermodal rail operator providing a cost-effective CO2 alternative to long-haul road freight throughout Europe.
