SEATTLE, WA: November 01, 2016. A partnership formed by the Port of Seattle, SkyNRG and Carbon War Room (CWR) is to investigate long-term financing options to supply all airlines at Seattle-Tacoma airport (Sea-Tac) with sustainable aviation fuel.
The airport said it had taken the lead in providing an airport-wide sustainable aviation fuel supply for all routine airline operations.
Port of Seattle commission president John Creighton commented: "We want to make it simple and cost-effective for all airlines to access sustainable aviation fuels and ideally create a model that can work for airports around the United States."
Currently, biofuel supply agreements in the U.S. are made through exclusive contracts between producers and airlines. The three partners said the transition to sustainable aviation fuel being a standard product used by all airlines at the airport is expected to grow as a result of their new initiative.
Sea-Tac will have support from CWR and SkyNRG on evaluating funding mechanisms to cover cost difference between sustainable aviation fuels and conventional fuels.
Long-term goals include working with decision makers on locally sourced fuel and regional economic investments, identifying supply routes for sustainable aviation fuel, and making sure alternate fuels used at Sea-Tac are sustainable.
"Airports are in a unique position, operating at the intersection between airlines, fuel suppliers, governments, passengers and local communities. They are perfectly positioned to support sustainable aviation fuels' transition from isolated transactions to regular operations," said Theye Veen, CFO of SkyNRG.
This latest move follows last year's launch of a US$250,000 Biofuel Infrastructure Feasibility Study by the Port of Seattle, together with Alaska Airlines and Boeing, to determine the best way to deliver sustainable aviation fuel to aircraft at Sea-Tac.
