HEERLEN, the Netherlands: November 15, 2016. Medical technology company Medtronic has started construction of a new 33,000 sq.mt. distribution facility next to its existing Center of Excellence in Heerlen.
Managed by Ceva Logistics, the new location will be able to serve over 15,000 hospitals and clinics in Europe within 24 hours.
Headquartered in Dublin, Medtronic employs 88,000 people worldwide in 160 countries.
"The new distribution center will allow Ceva to provide Medtronic with world class logistics services both today and in the future," said Bart Beeks, Ceva Logistics EVP for the Benelux. "We are extremely proud that a quality-focused company such as Medtronic considers us to be a partner, rather than a supplier," he pointed out.
Martin de Beer, alderman Economic Affairs, Municipality of Heerlen expressed his support for the Medtronic expansion saying it highlighted the company's status as the largest commercial employer in the region.
Ceva reported a 6.3 percent year-on-year fall in overall EBITDA for its 2016 third quarter ending September 30 on revenue of US$1.68 billion.
The company said its contract logistics business "resulted in good top line growth of 3.0 percent year-on-year in constant currency" due to continued success in Healthcare, Consumer & Retail, and Industrial verticals. Despite the growth, EBITDA was US$38 million, down against the previous year "but much better than in Q2 with a 15.2 percent improvement" due to what the company described as margin increases.
