STANSTED, Essex: November 23, 2016. Etihad Cargo has shipped 72 racehorses, worth US$45 million, from London Stansted Airport to Kuwait following the end of the European racing season.
A team of six grooms accompanied the horses during the flight on a B777 freighter to Kuwait City where they will spend the winter months training and racing.
With a loading that took six hours, Conan Busby, head of Cargo for Stansted owner Manchester Airports Group said: "Many of the horses taking part in this year's Olympic Games and the Queen's 90th Birthday celebrations passed through Stansted's dedicated equine facility."
The airport is conveniently located to several leading thoroughbred trainers and racecourses in the region.
Etihad Cargo senior vice president David Kerr noted: "The Middle East has strong ties to these magnificent creatures dating back thousands of years and, to this day, they are arguably the most precious cargo we carry.
"In 2016 alone Etihad Cargo has been entrusted to transport more than 1,200 horses, with several more large shipments scheduled before the end of the year."
