Another KLM resignation

AMSTERDAM: As first reported by the Dutch Financieele Dagblad newspaper in December last year, Erik Varwijk, managing director and EVP of Air France-KLM Cargo has resigned. He leaves the company on March 01.

Varwijk, who has been a member of the KLM board of managing directors since 2011 and head of cargo since April 2013, commented: "I haErik varwijk KLMve decided that I will not be available for reappointment at the end of my current term on July 01. With the completion of the strategic reorientation of cargo, the time has come for something new. I am very grateful for the many wonderful years with KLM, the opportunities it has offered me and the excellent cooperation with such diverse and dedicated colleagues."

Varwijk's departure is the latest in a number of senior management resignations from KLM including the sudden exit of president and CEO Camiel Eurlings in October 2014.

Earlier, in July, Jan Krems, former head of KLM Cargo for the Americas and 27-year company veteran, announced his departure to head up United Cargo. He has since been joined by Jacques Leijssenaar as vice president, cargo sales EMEIA after 18 years with KLM as a director for Italy, Switzerland and the Benelux as well as for south, central and eastern Europe.

With a successor yet to be named, chairman of the KLM supervisory board Hans Smits said of Varwijk: "In recent years, he has made an enormous contribution to the development of our e-commerce activities, the successful joint venture with Delta Air Lines and the integration of the commercial activities of Air France and KLM...As this reorientation is now entering a new phase, the time is right for a management reshuffle at Air France-KLM Cargo."

Last week, after questions were raised in the Dutch parliament about the prospect of KLM earnings being used to prop up Air France losses, the ailing airline group issued a statement saying following discussions with the KLM supervisory board there would be "no excess cash transfer" from KLM. Earlier this week Air France told its Workers Council that it was looking for 800 voluntary redundancies from ground staff and cabin crew this year.
