MIAMI, July 18, 2016. Miami-Dade County, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the City of Doralhave opened Miami's elevated NW 25th Street Viaduct, a US$63 million project that allows 5,000 trucks a day to avoid traffic congestion to and from MIA’s West Cargo Area.

“Modernizing our cargo area is critical to maintaining our position as America’s busiest international freight airport and one of the busiest in the world,” said Miami-Dade aviation director Emilio González. “N.W. 25th Street is the main artery for ground traffic between MIA’s cargo area, the busy warehouse district west of MIA, and Florida’s highway system, so the completion of the viaduct is a major milestone for our airport and ultimately our local, state and national economy.”

The viaduct provides a dedicated ground connection for MIA’s air cargo business that was valued at more than US$52 billion last year. Nationally, MIA handles more than 66 percent of all U.S. perishable imports including nearly 90 percent of the country’s flower imports. Some US$2.7 billion worth of perishables routed through MIA last year.

To attract new business opportunities and better utilize vacant cargo and non-terminal areas, MIA says it will launch a Foreign Trade Zone early next year with the potential to create 1,500 jobs and generate US$7.7 million annually in lease revenue.

L-100 CMJFARNBOROUGH: July 15, 2016. Brazil-based Bravo Industries is to purchase 10 LM-100J Super Hercules commercial freighter aircraft from Lockheed Martin. Bravo’s Logística, which includes Bravo Cargas and Bravo MRO, will operate the aircraft in Brazil.

“When we examined the market and regional demands for our logistics operations, there was only one aircraft that could do all the jobs we needed it to do to serve our customers: the LM-100J.” said JR Pereira, president and CEO of Bravo Industries. “The LM-100J is uniquely suited to reach Brazil’s underserved regions where we do business. These are areas that lack ground support and certain critical infrastructure required by other commercial freighters. The LM-100J was designed to meet the varying needs of the Brazilian landscape, in turn, allowing Bravo to deliver vital goods and services where they are needed most.”

Bravo’s air cargo services include scheduled and route-specific solutions (same-day, next-day, etc.), as well as special cargo handling (heavy, odd-shaped, hazardous, refrigerated, etc.) and custom operations.

Lateral Investment Management, a San Mateo, California-based investment firm, is providing funding to Bravo for the LM-100J acquisition. “We see tremendous opportunities for civilian application of the Super Hercules platform,” declared Kenneth Masters, managing partner of Lateral.

The LM-100J is the civil-certified version of the C-130J Super Hercules aircraft and has a maximum payload of 21.8 tonnes. The first aircraft is currently in production and will receive an FAA type certificate prior to delivery in 2018.

QATAR: July 19, 2016. Qatar – Qatar Airways Cargo has begun a weekly B777-200 freighter service linking Hamad airport, Doha with Luxembourg G.D, Zaragoza (Spain), New York JFK, and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The airline says it will be supporting the export of lobster and seafood from Halifax to Europe, the Middle East, South and North East Asia.

Qatar Airways chief officer Cargo Ulrich Ogiermann added: “We are very happy to add New York and Halifax to our growing list of new freighter routes. From their strategic geographical positions, not only will the new service provide our customers with great access to the Americas’ marketplace, it will allow us to share one of region’s most sumptuous exports with the world.”

AFKLMPJFKNEW YORK: July 19, 2016. Air France – KLM Cargo has opened a new handling facility at JFK that includes 72 cubic meters of storage at 2-8°C and 108 cubic meters at 15-25°C plus 10 Active container charging points.

The business unit says it plans to open 'The ARK' this Autumn and offer "previously unseen levels of service and care" for boarding, kennels, quarantine, import, export and transportation of large and small animals.

Additional services will include transportation in dedicated climate-controlled vehicles from aircraft, terminals, cargo facilities and other airport locations. Andy Newbold, regional director for AFKLMP Cargo said: "It is very exciting to be able to present the AF-KL Cargo brand at this high level."

WASHINGTON, DC: July 15, 2016. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has approved FedEx to be the first all-cargo airline providing scheduled flights to Cuba.  The company will begin once-daily Monday through Friday service between Miami, Florida and Matanzas, Cuba beginning January 15, 2017.

DOT’s award of non-Havana authority to FedEx is in addition to its proposal for eight U.S. airlines to begin scheduled services to Havana from Atlanta, Charlotte, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, New York City, Orlando and Tampa this Autumn.

The airlines are Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and United Airlines.
