FLENSBURG, Germany: February 20, 2017. DFDS has taken delivery of the first of two new RoRo freight vessels, each with a 20 percent increase in replacement capacity, from the German shipyard Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG).

DFDS 2The ships, the second of which will be delivered in September this year, have a capacity for 262 trailers and will be operated on North Sea routes where DFDS already has six vessels supplied by FSG. The company is to pay DKK0.8 billion this year for the two vessels.

"The volume on all routes within the DFDS network has grown noticeably, we are already using almost all the capacity available in our existing fleet," explained Peder Gellert, executive vice president of the DFDS Shipping Division. "The design of the ship, developed in Flensburg, meets current environmental requirements, reducing fuel consumption and provide much better handling when loading and unloading in port," he added.

DFDS expects to take delivery of two more freight RoRo vessels in 2019 that will be the largest in its fleet under an "ambitious" newbuild program that it said could include future combined freight and passenger RoRo vessels.

The company reported a net profit of DKK1.55 billion on revenue of DKK13.79 billion for 2016, a significant increase over the previous 12 months of DKK1.01 billion on revenue of DKK13.47 billion. DFDS is forecasting a 4.0 percent rise in revenue in 2017.

"We have raised our earnings level considerably during 2016," commented CEO Niels Smedegaard. "Nonetheless, our pursuit of improvement will continue. We are especially excited about exploring digital opportunities to improve customer satisfaction and operational efficiency."
