DUNKERQUE: August 01, 2017. A month after signing an agreement to develop an LNG station to supply tank trucks, Dunkerque LNG and Total Marine Fuels Global Solutions (TMFGS) are to support the first French LNG-powered RoRo vessel 'Honfleur', due to begin service between Ouistreham in northwest France and Portsmouth, UK from 2019.

An innovative supply chain for LNG provisioning will be based on ISO movable storage tank containers, said TMFGS.

BF HonfleurPort CEO Stéphane Raison commented: "Dunkerque-Port has supported this innovative sector for many years, and is now working with Dunkerque LNG and Total in their undertaking to build and then operate the supply station as part of a larger project to set up an LNG provisioning service by land and sea in the port of Dunkirk, so making LNG available on the market."

A year after the Brexit vote Brittany Ferries confirmed a £175 million order from the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellshaft shipyard in Germany for the 42,400 gross tons LNG ferry, with a capacity for 130 freight trailers or 550 cars and 64 freight trailers.

With LNG supplied by Dunkerque and the Total subsidiary, the vessel's four engines will feed electric generators and two electric propulsion motors to become the greenest ferry operating across the English Channel.

Brittany Ferries CEO Christophe Mathieu said: "It is important that we invest in new technologies and new vessels that respect the environment in which we operate. Equally, we must not forget that our customers expect Brittany Ferries ships to be comfortable, relaxing and adapted to the digital age. These objectives are compatible and I believe Honfleur will set a new standard for ferries operating on the Channel."
