LUXEMBOURG: August 28, 2017. Cargolux is to begin new services to Douala, Cameroon and Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Cargolux LUXA weekly service to Lubumbashi takes off on September 15 and every Friday thereafter with a return to Luxembourg via Johannesburg, Nairobi and London Stansted on a Sunday.

The Douala service starts on October 03 and operates every Wednesday via Bamako, Mali and returns direct to Luxembourg the following day.

Lubumbashi is the DRC's second largest city after the capital Kinshasa and acts as a hub for the country's mining industry that produces over 3.0 percent of the world's copper and half of its cobalt.

Historically the port of Douala handles most of the Cameroon's exports to Europe and Asia including oil, cocoa, coffee, fruits, metal and timber.

In July CMA CGM and Bolloré Transport & Logistics signed a 25-year concession to manage a new container terminal at the Port of Kribi, strategically situated on the Gulf of Guinea about 200 miles south of Douala. Connected to the city of Edéa, it provides a gateway to Chad and the Central African Republic and complements existing services at Douala.

The airline says it sees "promising potential" for growth in the country using its own road feeder services to Yaoundé, Cameroon's capital and second-largest city.

"Africa has always been and will always be an important market for Cargolux and we are happy to be able to support the continent's trade lanes to Europe, the United States and Asia as well as across the Cargolux network worldwide," said the company's regional director for Africa, Jonathan Clark.
