Hurricane Watch FloidaDALLAS/FORT WORTH: September 07, 2017. American Airlines (AA) has canceled 2,405 flights between today and September 11 as a result of Hurricane Irma, due to make landfall in South Florida on Sunday morning with a potential "catastrophic" impact according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami.

AA has added 16 extra flights from Miami International Airport (MIA) today with 12 to Dallas/Fort Worth, one to Philadelphia and three to New York that have included six B777-200 aircraft, several B767-300s and an A330-200.

The airline said its last flight out of MIA would be to Dallas/Fort Worth at 3.49PM Friday September 08 as it winds down operations at Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers and West Palm Beach. Additionally, flights that were scheduled to arrive in MIA Friday from Europe and South America have also been canceled.

The company's Orlando operation will close down during the course of Saturday afternoon with all flights canceled by the following day.

As a result of the devastation already caused by Irma and the impending impact of Hurricane Jose, AA Cargo is not accepting shipments to or from Antigua, Nassau, Turks & Caicos islands, Saint Kitts, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Saint Maarten "until further notice".

AA has issued a travel alert for more than 40 airports and said it would resume services in Florida based on airport and roadway conditions and the ability of staff to get to work.

With the latest forecast (right) from the NHC showing Irma now turning towards Georgia and Tennessee and away from the Carolinas, the airline's hub in Charlotte, NC may avoid its impact.

A spokesperson for MIA said the airport, which is not a designated shelter, would only close its passenger terminals if severe damage or safety concerns from the after-effects of Irma resulted in stranded passengers.
