ROCKFORLD, ILL: July 24, 2018. The US Federal Aviation Administration’s annual ranking of US airport cargo volume says Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD) moved from 31st place to 22nd position last year.

The airport says it is now ranked ahead of San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Boston Logan, Orlando and Baltimore-Washington. Memphis remained the No.1 US cargo airport in 2017 followed by Anchorage, Louisville, Chicago O'Hare and Miami.

“We are very proud of the air cargo boom that is taking place at RFD,” said Mike Dunn, RFD executive director. “Our growth and success are a result of our tremendous partnerships with public and private entities and we expect to see our numbers continue to rise.”

RFD airportNearly 1.4 billion pounds of cargo traveled through RFD in 2017, a 50 percent increase over the year before. One of the reasons for the growth included UPS moving its Des Moines operation, consisting of 13 daily flights, to RFD last July.

For the first six months of this year the airport handled 996 million pounds - more than its 2016 total - and is forecasting a two billion pounds throughput by the end of 2018, an 80 percent increase year-on-year.

“The numbers we are seeing so far this year are just amazing,” said Zach Oakley, RFD deputy director of Operations and Planning. “We expect to continue to climb this list as we have plenty of room to accommodate additional operations. With our dynamic team and strong partnerships at the airport, I don’t see this growth slowing any time soon.”

Earlier this month RFD broke ground on its new 120,000-square-foot building expansion at the airport’s cargo centre and begun construction of a new US$3.5 million parking ramp for freighter aircraft. The new ramp is in addition to the federally funded US$5.5 million expansion completed in late 2017. Both projects will be finished within the next 12 months.

The airport’s cargo success has led to the creation of 1,000 new jobs this year and RFD says it expects an additional 1,000 during the remainder of 2018 and throughout 2019.
