BARCELONA: July 13, 2018. SNCF Logistics is to acquire COMSA Rail Transport from Spanish infrastructure company COMSA Corporación and change its name to Captrain España.

comsaIn 2013 SNCF acquired 25 percent of the first private rail company in Spain and a full takeover “is proof of confidence in the potential development of the railway freight transport in the Iberian market as well as between the later and the rest of Europe, especially France,” according to the company.

In the past five years COMSA has increased sales by 70 percent to reach €32 million in 2017 as train frequencies rose from 8,400 to 19,200 in the period.

Commenting on the purchase COMSA Corporación president Jorge Miarnau said: “We are proud of having created and contributed to the growth of the first private railway company in Spain. We are sure that the new shareholder taking over will allow continue its development.”

COMSA Rail Transport has been operating commercial rail freight services in Spain since January 2008 including bulk freight (clinker, coal, ballast, etc.), iron and steel (scrap metal, profiles, etc.), automobiles (vehicles and parts), paper products and multiple customer intermodal transport services (containers and swap bodies).

Managing director of SNCF Logistics Alain Picard added: “This acquisition agreement is part of our strategy to position ourselves in the main European railway freight transport sector. With Captrain España we hope to fully integrate COMSA Rail Transport into our European Captrain network and strengthen our international offer throughout the continent.”
