DUNKERQUE: January 05, 2019. Dunkerque-Port and Greenmodal Transport, a subsidiary of Novatrans and part of the Charles-André Group, have launched the Dunkerque Green Solutions company to operate multimodal rail services from Dunkerque to points in Southern France and Northern Italy.

Greenmodal DunkerqueMaritime containers handled at Dunkerque’s Flanders Terminal, plus swap bodies for North-South traffic, now use the service to reach Bordeaux, Bayonne, Toulouse, Perpignan, Miramas / Marseille, Lyon, Avignon, Turin, Novara and Milan.

From next month the frequency will be increased to two or three departures a week in each direction as Dunkerque Green Solutions provides a rail shuttle between the Flanders Terminal and Dourges in the Hauts-de-France region and Valenton in the southeast of Paris to connect to southbound trains operated by Greenmodal and Novatrans.

"The start-up of this service represents a new key step in the development of containerized activity in Dunkerque (pictured),“ commented port CEO Stéphane Raison. “The fast connection with the hubs in Southern France as well as the improvement in the frequencies of the service to the Paris region will allow us to promote the regular departures from Dunkerque even more. The service will also provide the many industrialists in the region with a highly credible alternative to the ‘all-road’ mode with which to route their continental trade flows."

Noting the close collaboration with Dunkerque on the new service, Delphine André, president of the Charles-André Group, said it would enable his company to combine shipping with a continental transport service. “In so doing we hope to reach sufficient filling levels to break even. Intermodal transport, which has very high fixed costs, mainly those of train slots and railway traction, is only suitable and profitable if the volumes are there on a permanent and stable basis," he added.
