BUDAPEST: August 24, 2016. Construction of a 13,000 sq.mt. terminal for DHL Express at Budapest Airport will begin in September and open in July 2017.

DHL has been in the Hungarian market for 25 years and currently operates a daily A300-600 freighter from Leipzig and a Boeing 737 from Brussels to the country's capital. This is the second investment by Deutsche Post DHL following the move by its freight forwarding division to a new facility at the airport's business park in 2013.

"We see this as yet another major step forward, not only for the airport, but for the growing Hungarian economy as well. This is another successful example of Hungarian-German cooperation, creating growth and new job opportunities in Hungary," said Budapest Airport CEO Jost Lammers.

DHL Budapest 1"The construction of the new DHL Express facility is an integral part of our BUD 2020 development program, which earmarks HUF50 billion for airport development over the next five years," he added.

Ferenc Liszt International Airport employs more than 10,000 people in 70 different companies. That number will increase by 300 with the opening of the new DHL terminal next year.

According to Zoltán Bándli, managing director of DHL Express Hungary, the value of the new greenfield investment will be €25 million, the largest in the CEE region: "It reflects our commitment to building a state-of-the-art facility, to optimize our business procedures and strengthen cost-effectiveness. The fully automated new sorting system and enhanced shipment processing capabilities will allow us to implement an even earlier courier departure and later courier arrival," he explained.

Noting the 20-year lease agreement for the new DHL terminal, Property and Cargo director for Budapest Airport René Droese said: "We have been working hard in recent years with our partners from DHL Express to tailor the project to their present and future needs. As a result, we have signed one of the biggest lease agreements in the Budapest real estate market this year. We see very promising trends in both the integrator and the cargo businesses so the airport is the best possible location for a new DHL Express base."
