IAG Animal hub MadridBARCELONA/MADRID: September 09, 2016. Ekol Logistics has been named National Champion for Spain after the first round of the 2016/2017 European Business Awards (EBA), sponsored by international tax and auditing company RSM.

The EBA, now in its 10th year, celebrates business excellence and is supported by 33,000 businesses in 34 countries as well as academics and politicians.

Ekol Spain was evaluated on innovation, ethics and success and will now go through to a second stage of the competition that includes a public vote prior to a Gala Final in 2017.

"We are a young company in Spain but it motives [sic] us to work even harder, as it proves the strategy we realize is the proper one," said Alfio Centocinque, Ekol Spain country manager and member of the company's Executive Board. "Obviously, Spanish companies can do good import and export business only if they have good transport solutions. Therefore, the fact that logistics operators such as Ekol are improving their services and infrastructure is positive news for our economy," he added.

With companies in 14 countries across Europe, Turkish integrated logistics company Ekol operates also five RORO vessels and 5,500 truck/trailers. Ekol Spain offers daily groupage services throughout Europe and via Turkey to Iran, Iraq, Georgia, and Azerbaijan.

Spanish shippers are also benefitting from the launch of IAG Cargo's improved animal handling capabilities at Madrid-Barajas Airport. From this month, every pet travelling through the facility will receive a full veterinary check-up supported by a 25-strong care team (right).

IAG Cargo says investment in bespoke in-house staff training, animal track and trace, welfare regulations and container requirements is the start of improvements it is making to handling live animals at its Madrid hub.

"At IAG Cargo and we pride ourselves in going above and beyond the requirements set out by IATA Live Animal Regulations," said Daniel Johnson, manager Global Products, IAG Cargo. "Having worked closely with the City of London Animal Reception Centre at Heathrow, we have an unrivalled understanding of the needs of a huge variety of species, including endangered animals."
