HAMBURG: December 14, 2016. Samudera Indonesia has appointed Rickmers Shipmanagement to manage the operation of its two supramax bulk carriers.

Headquartered in Jakarta, Samudera operates containerships, LPG and chemical tankers via four business segments covering liner shipping, logistics, terminal handling and agency services. Last month the company launched its latest chemical tanker (right) built by Sasaki Shipbuilding in Hiroshima.

Rickmers says it has also won Westfal-Larsen as a new customer, adding 16 ships to its fleet under management for a total of 115 vessels.

Sinar MorotaiBased in Bergen, Norway the Westfal-Larsen group provides marine transport services as ship owners, technical and commercial managers, and operates 20 advanced Box-Shaped, Open Hatch Gantry and Jib Crane vessels.

Rickmers Group CEO Ignace Van Meenen commented: "Our ship management approach is based on a particularly high level of transparency ensured by extensive technical, financial and operational reporting, and supported by our focus on energy efficiency and performance monitoring.

This approach provides our customers with immediate benefits and has been independently confirmed by our positive rating by RightShip of 4.7 out of 5 possible points," he added.

RightShip was formed in 2001 BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto to improve dry bulk safety and quality standards and draw on the two companies' ship vetting expertise. In 2006 international food, agriculture and risk management company Cargill joined as an equal equity partner.

The three companies then combined their vetting resources to develop a Ship Vetting Information System (SVIS) as a comprehensive risk management tool with a particular focus on the petroleum, chemical and gas sectors.

Last month SVIS was replaced by 'RightShip Qi' that has the ability to instantaneously analyze, compare and integrate data relating to port state control inspections, casualty history, satellite data and terminal feedback. The object is to improve maritime safety and efficiency, according to Rightship.
