Jesse Kaplan CEO and Founder of ParcelBENTONVILLE, AK: October 03 2017. Walmart has acquired Parcel, a technology-based, 24/7 service that uses routing algorithms to deliver perishable and non-perishable items to customers in New York City.

The deal closed on September 29 and Wal-Mart said the price "was smaller than previous acquisitions we've made this year".

The company said it plans to leverage Parcel for last mile delivery of both general merchandise as well as fresh and frozen groceries from Walmart and Jet.

Parcel has partnerships with several meal kit, grocery and e-commerce companies and in the past two years has delivered from a warehouse in Brooklyn more than one million meals the same day, overnight and in scheduled two-hour windows.

According to Nate Faust, Walmart U.S. eCommerce Supply Chain senior vice president, delivery is increasingly one of the most important elements for online shoppers and Parcel "is a proven leader in e-commerce package delivery the last mile".

"Parcel has developed unique expertise delivering to customers in a distinctly challenging and essential market," explained Faust. "New York City is the top market for both Jet and Walmart.com, and because of the density of the area – along with the proximity of our fulfillment centers – it's the perfect place for high-impact innovation."
