AMSTERDAM: September 06, 2018. Customers of Air France KLM Martinair Cargo (AFKLMP) now have the option of placing active tracking devices with their shipments prior to carrier acceptance and then retrieve them at final destination.

KLM Cargo B747 400ERF 1Christophe Boucher, senior vice president Sales & Distribution at AFKLMP commented: “Our aim is to support our customers in using end-to-end tracking solutions throughout the journey of their shipment. This forms part of our digital journey, expressed in the services we wish to offer our customers.”

The devices are capable of sending data through telecom (or other) networks and providing GPS location plus temperature, humidity, shock/tilt and light data.

Shippers can only use equipment pre-approved by the three carriers for use on their flights and those of Delta Air Lines. They already include Sendum PT300D; OnAsset Sentry500 Flightsafe; and Cartasense U-Sensor 100115.

With the exception of the third option, if a shipment contains more than two active tracking devices it must be declared as a ‘DGR lithium battery shipment’ in compliance with IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, say the carriers.

Because these devices can be subject to US export controls and categorized as dual-use, they can’t be used on flights to North Korea, Iran, Syria, Sudan and Cuba. Also, bookings with the new equipment using 057 and 074 waybill prefixes won’t be accepted on Kenya Airways, MRN Airlines, Air Calin and China Southern adds AFKLMP.
