PURCHASE, N.Y.: September 20, 2018. Atlas Air is to operate a B747-400 freighter for SF Express between China and the US from next month.

SF Express buys Jade Cargo B747s“SF Express plays a very important role in the growing express and e-commerce industries,” commented Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings (AAWH) president and CEO William Flynn.

Last November, SF Express spent RMB320 million in an online auction to acquire two ex-Jade Cargo B747-400 freighters (pictured) to operate from a new Ezhou Airport/Hubei International Logistics Hub in China's Hubei Province, expected to open by the end of 2018.

A year ago China's Ministry of Commerce approved a joint venture between UPS and SF Holding, the parent company of SF Express, to combine 13,000 service points across 331 cities in China with the UPS network in 220 countries.

The two companies now operate international delivery services from China to the US as a continuation of their collaboration that began in 2015 when SF's Heike retail stores in Shanghai and Shenzhen offered UPS international express services.

"China is leading the world in terms of e-commerce market size, growth, penetration and mobile business usage," said Alan Wong, SF group vice president. "Coupled with a rapidly growing and internet-savvy consumer base, it's imperative that SF and UPS collaborate to revolutionize the logistics sector."

In a related move, earlier this month AAWW announced that Atlas Air would provide a second B747-400 freighter for Asiana Cargo to connect South Korea with several US destinations.
