BLS C SWISSBERNE, Switzerland: March 07, 2019. Swiss railway company BLS Cargo has acquired Belgian rail freight operator Crossrail to strengthen its position in the European North-South freight corridor and provide access to Belgian ports.

Crossrail has been acquired from Rhenus Logistics and operates in both Belgium and Germany. The takeover is subject to approval by the relevant competition authorities and the price has not been disclosed.

BLS Cargo, which generates a third of its turnover from the Belgian market, has been working with Crossrail for two years providing traction east of the Rhine in Germany and Belgium carrying traffic on the Belgium-Germany-Switzerland-Italy freight corridor.

“As a freight corridor service provider, Crossrail is very similar to BLS Cargo, in addition to which we are a perfect match geographically,“ said BLS Cargo CEO Dirk Stahl. “The takeover means that we can further improve our position on the north-south corridor whilst safeguarding and expanding the important link to Belgium and the ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge,” he added.

Crossrail has a current turnover of €70 million. In 2017 BLS Cargo reported revenue of CHF202.3 million and a net profit of CHF3.5 million.
