Reporting on the Toll Group and Kintetsu purchases in February, a Financial Times correspondent observed: "Logistics may seem like the dull plumbing of global trade."

Try using your lavatory without plumbing. See how dull that is.

The European Commission values the world's logistics industry at €5.5 trillion or 14.0 percent of global GDP. However the real value is far higher: modern societies would be unsustainable without logistics.

In January 2014 we launched freightweek with the aim of promoting sustainable business practices in the global logistics industry.

Business sustainability is often defined as a way for companies to manage their financial, social and environmental risks, obligations and opportunities. This is sometimes referred to as people, profits, and planet - and process.

Despite the vagaries of history, the logistics industry has some great examples of Sustainability. The Swire Group, still a 45 percent shareholder in Cathay Pacific, began trading in 1816; Kuehne + Nagel has been a freight forwarder since 1890; Maersk launched its shipping line in 1904; UPS has been delivering parcels since 1907; and if KLM survives its cohabitation with Air France, the world's first international airline will be 100 years old in 1919.

SWISS A330On May 07 at the transport logistic exhibition in Munich, freightweek will be co-hosting with Swiss WorldCargo a conference session entitled 'What price ignorance? Logistics is the key to a sustainable global economy'.

Time and location:

Thursday, May 07, 2015
16.00 - 17.30
Forum II, Hall A4
Refreshments will follow

Speakers:

  • Shankar Venkateswaren, Head of Tata Sustainability Group
  • Martin Willhaus, President of the Kühne Foundation
  • Mike Wilson, Global Head of Logistics at Panalpina
  • Mads Stensen, Global Advisor on Sustainability at Maersk Line
  • Oliver Evans, Chief Cargo Officer, Swiss International Air Lines

Talks will focus on the emerging circular economy, reverse logistics, the business cost of emissions, the need for ethical leadership, education and why the Tata Group thinks Sustainability is synonymous with corporate survival. Entrance is automatic if you're attending the three-day exhibition. We look forward to seeing you there.
