LONDON HEATHROW: November 08, 2017. In anticipation of government approval to build its third runway, Heathrow has published a list of 65 so-called 'Logistics Hubs' that could be used to build much of the project off-site.

The company said the four chosen hubs would preassemble components in other parts of Britain before transporting them in consolidated loads to Heathrow with the goal of cutting costs and emissions.

HEATHROW EXPANSION"As the UK leaves the EU, Heathrow is an essential infrastructure project that will ensure Britain remains an open trading nation," commented Heathrow chairman Lord Deighton.

"The third runway is not a London-centric project; it is one we are opening up to the whole of the UK, asking for its skills and expertise to help build an asset this country so desperately needs to safeguard its future prosperity," he added.

According to Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye, constructing the new Terminal 2 with suppliers from all over Britain "was a great learning experience" his company wants to build upon with the logistics hubs.

Heathrow's list of 65 hub candidates is the result of a questionnaire that sought to identify economic benefits to a regional part of the UK that covered facility size and services, supply chain capacity and skills development.

The companies and organizations include: Prologis International Rail Terminal at Daventry in the East Midlands; Peel Ports at the Port of Great Yarmouth, Port of Liverpool and London Medway Port; Manchester's Airport City; Belfast International Airport; Fourth Ports, Scotland; Glasgow Prestwick Airport; Associated British Ports, Cardiff; the Palletforce Super Hub in the West Midlands; and Doncaster Sheffield Airport and Leeds Bradford Airport, both in Yorkshire.

Despite a new public consultation period on questionable levels of noise and air pollution, the UK Department of Transport still expects a Parliamentary vote in 2018 approving the start of constructing Heathrow's third runway in early 2021, with completion by the end of 2025.
